To Karen, with a copy to the new Board. Yes and no, the splitting of Publicity was originally discussed as a way to accomodate/complement/optimize my particular skill set. We were envisioning splitting the Publicity Chair into 2 positions, one position for ink on paper and one digital. YOUR job is the digital half, Social Media, and you made it very clear that was all you could sign up for before you ran. Scope creep is not an option since print & digital are two completely different skill sets. Not many can do both well. I can’t. Glad to have you since I feel digital is a much more relevant need and there are plenty of designer/members who can take on ink on paper assignments. While it would have been a nice luxury and way to move forward, the current system is not broken and doesn’t require a separate Board position. When I was President I took on a lot of the graphics work because I could and everyone else was working so hard on logistics. I realized there wasn’t really anyone (or a team of designers/writers) assigned to do the postcards etc. It was all time-consuming random volunteering, so originally I thought I would stay on to do that and identify more/better advertising options. The combination of being VP to my own Presidency turned out to be overwhelming, especially combined with an epic computer fail. Of course this is now your new President and his Board’s decision to make, not mine or Maryly’s alone. I know CSP doesn’t yet have a VP or a Publicity Chair but my suggestion is for the VP to take on researching print publications opportunities and Public Relations outreach to the community and organizations. Chaotic oversight on our part, but I think CSP does still need a Publicity Chair to do Marketing and if they can do graphics too, great. If not, they could take on thevrole of coordinating the graphics needs by reverting to recruiting members to volunteer on a project by project basis. We have an elegant set of style templates that several Board Members are very familiar with, that doesn’t really require deep graphics knowledge. With direction from the Exhibitions Chair the Treasurer can réserve and pay for the space where suggested. Not optimal, but it worked fine for years and still can until CSP finds the right person among their membership to take on print. I also told Joanna I would help with graphics if I was available but I’m not ready to take on creating a new Board position and redefining a second. And of course I’m available to help Moij with the transition, but the new Board and all its positions should reflect HIS vision now, not mine. Karen Gallagher-Iverson stepped forward to tackle social media. BUT, between the decision to split and the annual meeting, you (Helene) withdrew your willingness to do Marketing (major last minute burn out!). We should have revised the ballot at that point, re-combining Social Media and Marketing into the one position of Publicity. But we forgot. The upshot is we have Karen ready to run with Social Media but we don’t have anyone to tackle Publicity/Marketing. >> >> Helene, I know you’re recovering from serious last-minute-itis but you are our Past President and the person who was going to tackle Marketing, so what do you think we should do?
