Whenever the next meeting is, I’d like to see Special Event Yuji Hiratsuka’s Oct. visit on the agenda.
His visit was approved in concept by the CSP board last year.

Back story: At last year’s Annual Member show at Piedmont Art Center, a gaggle of 6, 7, or 8 CSP members were huddled together for a long time trying to figure out how Yuji Hiratsuka made those color etchings! No plate marks were seen, so his registration MUST be PERFECT. And how did he get those tiny washes of color to be perfectly within the lines? If a bunch of printmakers can’t figure it out, it’s time for a special event!

Now we have a date and a venue:

Sat, Oct. 27 at Kala Art Institute.

Kala has generously agreed to donate the gallery free of charge. Normally the gallery rents for $1320 for a half day to non-profit organizations:

This is an excellent gift!

Yuji’s talk will be a power point, then actual prints, followed by a demo, demo will be held after 3 pm

I can’t find Kala’s email about a reception: either they will or will not pay for a reception or for part of a reception. I’ll get that cleared up soon. I think they said they’d pay for part of the reception.

Anticipated expenses:

His honorarium will be $350.
Travel $253 (he plans to drive from Portland to Oakland. Cost will be 0.20 cents per mile per federal guidelines) 629 miles one way. This will cost a minimum of $252.
Per diem of $69 per day (again, federal guidelines) (Friday Oct 26, Oct, 27, Oct, 28, Oct. 29) = $276
Subtotal: $878

Yuji will stay at my house.

I proposed to Yuji a potluck dinner at my house Friday night, and a no-host dinner at A Cote restaurant (Welden workshop participants had dinner here: we could hear each other easily) or maybe something closer to Kala, like Cucina Riva. If potluck is too onerous, it could be a catered dinner. There could be some expense or not involved in these two dinners.

I’ll want to run this by everyonen for input, discussion, approval.

I’m hoping an At Large member will see how easy and fun it is to organize a special event. Yuji’s visit is the most complicated of special events because of travel and per diem. Normally a special event might be either a visit to a CSP member’s studio for a demo, a docent-led tour of a museum collection or a print show, or an evening lecture. CSP averages 3 special events per year: we can do more, we can do less.
