HI Mark,
Yes, absolutely send a photo of the print! Also, take a photo of the title and signature at the bottom of the print and email both to me.
The value of the print resides primarily in the artist, not in the seller, but Vickery, Atkins, & Torrey was influential and active in early 20th C. San Francisco print history.
I edited a book (no longer in print, only available as an e-book) entitled “California Society of Printmakers: 1913-2013, One Hundred Years” and am familiar with the name Vickery, Atkins & Torrey. In the book I included two photos of the gallery at its 550 Sutter Street location, where the society exhibited at least 9 times, first in April 1913, then annually between 1924-1931 (page 41). The photos I used were from Wikipedia article on Vickery, Atkins, and Torrey. Permission to use the photos came via the Wikimedia Commons, via the Vickery Family Albums, located at the California Historical Society, microfilmed by the Archives of American Art.
There are several other possible sources of information:
1. Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, at the Legion of Honor
2. Daniel Lienau’s Annex Galleries in Santa Rosa
3. Other local print dealers, searchable through the IFPDA, International Fine Print Dealers Association
4. Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division
I’m looking forward to seeing what you have!
