One legacy of Oakland’s Ghost Ship Fire are the Jonathan Bernbaum Awards. This is the

Jonathan Bernbaum Memorial Award for Autonomous Art at the East Bay Community Foundation, 2019:
This annual award is given in memory of Jonathan Bernbaum to an artist, group of artists, collective or
gallery whose work demonstrates innovation in their field. At the time of his death in the December 2016
Oakland Ghost Ship fire, Jonathan Bernbaum was a world-renowned visual projection artist, passionately
committed to the Bay Area arts community. He was also the godson of BCCO bass Roy Nierenberg. Two
awards, each up to $2,000 will be awarded in June to commemorate Jonathan’s birthday. Applications are
due May 1, 2019 by midnight. Eligibility Requirements: • You must live in the Bay Area. • Be passionately
committed to the Bay Area arts community. • Be an active participant in the creation of radical and
expansive non-commercial artist-driven events, community spaces, art happenings, free festivals and/or
political actions, especially those supporting alternative culture and dynamic community engagement. •
Artist(s) must have a 501c3 fiscal sponsor (does not need to be in the East Bay). • Artists from all artistic
disciplines are welcome to apply, including but not limited to: multimedia, video art, film, sound design,
textile arts, radio producing, sculpture, fine arts, dance, performance and circus arts. To apply, see:
