Hello printmakers

Does anyone have a personal technique to share for getting smooth, even plate tone when wiping copper and zinc etching plates? Specifically for just wiping smooth areas of the plate, not adding an aquatint or other permanent manipulation to the plate.  I'm looking for more control over happy accidents rather than total control, if you get my meaning. Your input is gratefully valued.
