Dear Printmakers:

Please excuse this mass mailing and I hope some of the words may resonate.

It is a great privilege to be honorary or lifetime member of the California, Cape Cod, Rochester, Maryland, MAPC, SGCI and SAGA printmakers' organizations. As time creeps upon us, we don’t always realize certain facts until all of a sudden.
I think most people identify me as the 'Solarplate Guy' but there is the builder, teacher, author, master printmaker, painter and discoverer. I know, it’s impossible for everyone to join me in celebrating my 100th and 101st solo exhibitions the weekend of October 21st and 22nd companioned by the premier of the documentary film “Lasting Impressions.” Along with that are the birthday's of Franz Liszt, Robert Rauschenberg, Annette Funicello and my 82nd; sing if you like!
As printmakers, sometimes we play second fiddle, after sculptors and painters. No matter how we rank, we move forward with the purpose of creativity in our hearts. Sometimes the rejection rug is yanked from under us and we collapse, while other times we have hydraulic jacks elevating us to unforeseen heights. I have probably experienced more of that than most people and it is always, always discouraging, however, allowing openness and awareness to be present, the rainbow seems to shine through. Old time printmakers understand this hurting reference, while young printmakers may be beginning their feelings of insecurity. Soooo, I emphasize to younger printmakers to try and understand rough lessons and to encourage and support your fragile sensitivity. Stay with your heart’s intentions…remain true to the artist drive!
